East Molesey Kent Town Conservation Area - I wish to trim a silver birch tree (Betula pendula) located in the front garden of the property, currently approximately 9 meters tall, within a designated conservation area. The tree does not have a TPO. The proposed work involves selective pruning to reduce the canopy height and spread, ensuring clearance from overhead telephone wires and mitigating potential hazards. The silver birch is approximately 9 meters tall with a canopy spread of say 5m (estimated). It is in good health but has branches interfering with overhead telephone wires. All work will be carried out by a qualified arborist in accordance with British Standard BS 3998:2010 Plan is to do selective pruning to remove obstructing branches, thin the canopy to reduce wind resistance, and maintain the tree's aesthetic and ecological value. The tree's branches are currently entangled with overhead telephone wires, posing a risk of damage to the wires during high winds or storms, which could disrupt telecommunications services and create a safety hazard for residents and passersby. The silver birch contributes to the character of the conservation area, and the proposed trimming is minimal and sympathetic to preserve its visual and environmental value. The work will enhance the tree's health and longevity by reducing stress from overcrowded branches. The tree's proximity to the public highway means falling branches could pose a risk to pedestrians or vehicles. Trimming will mitigate this risk while maintaining the tree's contribution to the streetscape. Selective pruning will improve air circulation and light penetration, reducing the risk of disease and promoting healthy growth. The work will also address potential structural weaknesses caused by the tree's interaction with the wires.
